Harpe … Betty went to be with her Lord on Wednesday March 13, 2019, at approximately 10 a.m. She was born on February 10, 1924, in a tent in Walla Walla, to Arthur Hansen and Dorothy (Nelson) Hansen. She attended local schools and was in the 10th grade when she left school to work for people cleaning houses to make a living. Betty met the love of her life, Donald (Bud) Harpe at a dance at the Natatorium in Walla Walla.
He courted her for 4 years before they married. They married in Walla Walla on January 10, 1943. Soon after the marriage, Bud was drafted into the Army and left in March of 1943.
He went to war and left his wife and a daughter, which was born the following November. He returned from the war in 1945 to be with his wife and daughter. A second daughter was born in September 1947.
After her daughters were in school, Betty went out into the working world and worked at the Walla Walla Country Club, JCPenney’s and Baker Boyer Bank for 25 years as a teller, which she retired from. After retirement and her husband passed away, she traveled extensively and enjoyed each trip and cruise she took. She loved life and each adventure she embarked upon.
Betty lived all her life in the Walla Walla Valley and loved it. She moved into the Washington Odd Fellows Home and lived there for almost 20 years. She was also known at the home as “Betty Boop!
” She loved her nickname. Mom made many friends at the home and enjoyed chatting with them at the dining table, in the hall and would tootle down the hall to visit her close friends. In her later years, she enjoyed coloring pictures, she did beautiful work.
She loved to play bingo, also doing word search. She was always working on first million by playing bingo at the home! Betty was a member of the College Place Presbyterian Church and Narcissa Lodge #2.
Betty is survived by two daughters, Darlene Ruchert of Walla Walla and Linda (Bill) McClure of Arizona; one sister, Wilma Jean Kiehn of Walla Walla; one brother, Francis Mawhin of Oregon; five grandchildren, Tammy Luchte of Spokane Valley, WA, Lori Ramirez of Walla Walla, Chuck (Anne) Shelley of Colorado, Richard (Diana) Shelley of California, and Andrew (Samantha) Shelley of Oregon; 17 greatgrandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bud Harpe; two sisters, Geraldine (Geri) Albers, Mildred (June) Young; and one brother, Donald Mawhin; three great-grandchildren. The funeral for Betty will be on April 2 at 12:30 p.m. at Herring Groseclose Funeral Home.
Viewing will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on April 1 and from 9 a.m. the morning of the funeral April 2. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Memorial contributions maybe made to the College Place Presbyterian Church or the Washington Odd Fellows Home through Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder, Walla Walla.
There will be a fellowship gathering at the College Place Presbyterian Church for refreshments immediately following the grave service. Until we are joined together again in a better life. We love you Betty, mom, grandma, great-grandma and great-great grandma, and will miss the special way you brightened our lives.
