Obituary for Bishop Mervin J. Sherlin Bishop Mervin J. Sherlin a resident of Cleveland passed away Monday July 9, 2018 at the family residence surrounded by his loved ones. He was the son of the late Robert and Maude Ogle sherlin and was also preceded in death by his sister and brother in law Dot and T.L. Frazier, his brothers Jay, Boog and Roy Sherlin. Mervin attended grammar school at Tempton Hill Elementary and graduated from Bradley Central High.

After graduating he enlisted in the United States Navy and served onboard the USS Helena as a Boatswain Mate. He was awarded an Honor and Pin by hospice of Chattanooga because of his service in the United Stated Navy. He attended Cleveland State Community College where he received his Associates Degree in business.

He worked for Magic Chef from where he retired. He received his 5 year certificate of Mechanical Engineering sponsored by Magic Chef. After his retirement he became a full time minister with the Church of God.

He started in the Helps Ministry, recording services at North Cleveland Church of God where he was a member. He served in the outreach ministry as a fill in pastor. He became an Ordained Bishop in the church and received his Doctor of Divinity from the University of Missouri.

He graduated from School of Wisdom for Ministers in Fort Worth Texas. He was appointed as one of five members of the original Church of God Board of Elders. He served on the Board of Evangelism at North Cleveland Church of God and was an executive board member of the National Church of God Bible College.

He was founder and senior Pastor at World Covenant Ministries as well as Chancellor of World Covenant Bible College. While pastoring in Tennessee, Virginia, Florida and Kentucky he was appointed Church of God district overseer of Eastern Kentucky. He also ministered in Guatemala, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and Israel.

As a devoted Pastor he served with compassion and respect for others. He and his family are members of Mt. Olive Church of God.

He was born at home in Cleveland Tn. and grew up attending South Cleveland Church of God. He loved to travel, playing his guitar, singing with his family and Tennessee football.

Mervin is survived by the love of his life for over 58 years Betty Jo Prince Sherlin, his son Billy Sherlin and his wife Maryellen, his daughter Alina Sherlin, his brothers Jim Sherlin and his wife Linda, D.A. Sherlin and his wife Mary Jo, his sisters in law Lois Sherlin, Joyce Sherlin and Alice Sherlin, his grandchildren Jessica Alina Montkahaus and her husband David, William Robert Currier, Richard Alan Hudalla, Antonia Elizabeth Moran, his god granddaughter Kiki Prince, his brother in law Bob E. Prince, his sister in law Patsy Prince. He is also survived by many wonderful and loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends with each one being very special and who he loved greatly. Mervin will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends.

A Remembrance of Life Service will be held at 11 o’clock Friday at Mount Olive Church of God with Pastor Gary Sears and Pastors Sedonia and Terry Petty officiating. The committal service will follow at 1:30pm at the US National Cemetery in Chattanooga with Benny Williams, Donnie Sherlin, Joel Sherlin, Eddie Sherlin, Vernon Holloway and Jerry Ogle serving as casket bearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Frazier, Kenneth Ogle, Stan Sherlin, Herman Sherlin, Robbie Sherlin, Deryle Holloway, Mike Frazier and Roger Frazier.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 4 until 8pm at Jim Rush Funeral and Cremation Services North Ocoee St. Chapel. The family would like to express their gratitude to Hospice of Chattanooga and to Tennova Health Care for the excellent care and comfort they provided. And also to family members and friends for all of their support.
