Carol J. Lockheart, 84, of East Moline, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2019, at home. Cremation will take place and Memorial Services will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 24, 2019, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m., prior to the services at the funeral home.
Private inurnment will be at Rose Lawn Memorial Estate. Memorials may be made to Hampton Historical Society, Moline Preservation Society, or the East Moline Public Library. Carol was born on August 5, 1934, in Moline, the daughter of John V. and Viola E. (Krantz) Anderson.
After graduation, Carol worked as an auditor for Royal Neighbors from 1952 until 1960. She worked for Management Computer Accounting from 1970 until 1985, and for CBE Group in Rock Island from 1986 until her retirement in 1999. Universally described as a sweetheart and a joy, Carol was much loved by her family and by the many friends she brought into her circle.
She was joiner and a caretaker, with a warm and loving heart. She informally took many under her wing, from her 7th grade friend Donna Groves to honorary daughters Martha (Chaney) Reger (New Mexico) and Jennie Baas (North Carolina. ) Lunch groups “A & B,” her bingo posse and Lagomarcino’s birthday bunch at Ridgewood Towers, and friends from CBE will miss her, too.
Always willing to step up when she saw a need, Carol served on the Hampton Library Board of Trustees from 1978-1981, Hampton Elementary School PTA, and volunteered with Hampton United Methodist. She was a past president and founding member of the Hampton Historical Society, and of the Moline Preservation Society, where she created and researched the family business category of the annual preservation awards. Carol also helped in the early effort by the society to clean and reclaim the John Deere home.
She was also a member of the former Ridgewood Towers social club, and served as the Schwan’s connection for many at the building. Carol touched many lives, more than her family will ever know. She was not afraid to stand up for what she believed in or felt was right.
“She be little, but fierce” could have been written for her. She had a gift for seeing both sides of a dispute, and forgave often. She faced real obstacles in her personal life, but had immense stores of humor, joy, and grit.
Nevertheless, she persevered. Survivors include daughter, Lisa Lockheart, East Moline; cousins, Karen (John) Chantry, Winthrop Harbor, IL, Diane Lau Krantz, California, Joyce (Rich) Michels, California, Tom Krantz, Alaska; one nephew and several nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, son, Martin, and a brother, Leslie Anderson.
