Obituary for Charles Alan Derrow MD Charles Alan “Chuck” Derrow MD died at home on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 from frontotemporal degeneration, a long and progressive organic dementing illness. Chuck was born in 1949 in New York City, the eldest son of David and Muriel Derrow (née Bernstein). He moved to Columbus in 1963 and graduated from Eastmoor High School.

He studied anthropology and zoology at the University of Michigan and then earned his MD from Ohio State University. After completing residency in internal medicine at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx, he returned to Columbus and practiced in primary care for over 20 years. He also served as medical director of several Columbus extended care facilities, and later added a subspecialty certification in Geriatrics.

Chuck was a fitness enthusiast and loved the outdoors. He passionately pursued many hobbies throughout the years, including mountain climbing, camping and hiking, scuba diving, cross-country skiing, hunting, martial arts, and cycling. In his work he was devoted to his patients, advocated for them, and strived always to continue learning for their benefit.

He adored his family. His presence will be missed, but his kindness, wit, and guidance will stay with his family and friends always. Chuck was preceded in death by his mother, Muriel, as well as by his first wife, Sherry Mulne.

He is survived by his loving wife and devoted caregiver, Susan Couden; his father, David; his siblings: Martin (Wendy), Sandra Perry (Keith), Andrew (Janis), and Philip (Barbara); his children: Solomon (Catherine), Shoshana Krilow (Chad), Avram (Ginger), and Zoe Mitchell (David); his stepdaughter, Etana Caplin. He is survived also by his 9 grandchildren – Dovra, Gabrielle, Rafael, Charlotte, May, Zev, Jianni, Drea, and Charlie – who knew him in different ways but all loved their Saba. His family extends the deepest gratitude to the professionals of Zusman Hospice, and to all the independent caregivers and friends who helped Chuck remain in the comfort of his home.

Funeral services will be held at Epstein Memorial Chapel, located at 3232 E. Main Street in Columbus, on Thursday, June 7th at 10:30 AM. Family will receive visitors on Thursday from 1-3 PM and from 6-8 PM at 2247 Astor Avenue in Bexley. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the University of Michigan School of Public Health’s Lawren H. Daltroy Memorial fund, which provides support to students focusing on physician/patient communication.
