OBITUARY Charles “Charming Charlie” E. Horton January 27, 1928 – September 15, 2018 Charles “Charming Charlie” E. Horton 1928-2018, 91, of Loves Park, Illinois, passed away peacefully at Alden Debes, in Rockford, Illinois with his niece Valerie Mabie by his side on September 15, 2018. Charles was born to Kenneth and Olive (Glass) Horton on January 27, 1928 in Pensacola, FL. Charles went into the service at 16 as a Merchant Marine serving in World War II in the Pacific Ocean.

He talked highly and had many stories about being a Merchant Marine. He played semi-pro football for Belvidere Merchants, pro-softball and an avid swimmer for a local team. He was a construction worker by trade and owned Charm Construction Company in Loves Park, which was his passion for many years.

He was known as “Charming Charlie” throughout the town of Loves Park. He was a member of the Lions Club. He loved the outdoors, fishing, reading and Chicago sports, especially the Chicago Bears and Cubs.

He loved gardening in his vegetable and flower gardens. He also loved to can his own jelly. Most of all he adored his cat Mrs. Beasley.

The family would love to extend a special thank you to all the doctors and nurses at Swedish American Hospital, visiting nurses, Alden Debes, and Agrace Hospice for their loving and compassionate care of Charlie. He is survived by his brother David (Dorothy) Horton of South Dakota and their children Tammy (Craig) Murray and David (Mary) Horton Jr.; Brother Robert (Sharon) Horton of Machesney Park and their children Diane (Thomas) Schael and their son Spencer; Valerie Mabie (caregiver) and her children Meaggan (Charles) Birmingham, Brenden Gault and Giannah Mabie. His Sister Julie (George) Howe of Rochelle along with her immediate family.

He had numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and grandchildren. Proceeded by his siblings Moritz and John Horton, Son Doug Horton and Daughter JoAnn Horton and his parent Kenneth and Olive (Glass) Horton. Entombment service with full military honors will be 11:00 am Friday, September 28, 2018 at Chapel of Love Mausoleum in Sunset Memorial Gardens 8800 N. Alpine Road in Machesney Park.
