OBITUARY Charles Douglas Cates June 10, 1964 – December 19, 2018 Charles Douglas Cates, age 54, most recently of Foley, Alabama, died on December 19, 2018. He was raised in Center Point, Alabama, the only son of Charles and Frances Cates and eldest brother to four sisters. Upon graduating Hewitt-Trussville High School, Doug immediately enlisted in the US Army.

Throughout his life, he also served in the US Air Force and US Coast Guard. Throughout his service time, he was able to experience life all over the world. Doug came to know Christ as his personal Savior as a young man, and as an adult, worshipped at Beth Hall Synagogue.

One of the greatest moments of his life was visiting Israel and being baptized in the Jordan River. His faith was one of the cornerstones of his life. Doug was also fiercely devoted to his parents, sisters, nieces and nephews.

He loved hiking, target shooting and taking care of his pets. If you didn’t know him, he seemed shy and reserved, but to his friends and family, he was humorous and caring. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Cates and Frances Calfee Cates.

He is survived by his sisters, Donna Lynn Haynes (Jerry) of Pell City, AL, Jena Frances Barnett (Doug) of Pinson, AL, Ann Marie Smith (Rodger) of Clanton, AL, and Amy Leigh Merrell (Rodney) of Gulf Shores, AL; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; aunts, Sylvia Lucas of Georgia and Sue Cates of Madison, AL; uncle, Joe Cates (Jackie) of Childersburg, AL; and best friend, David Glass. A Celebration of Doug’s Life will be held on Friday, December 28, 2018 at 11:30 AM at Rockco Funeral Home (Montevallo). The family will receive friends beginning at 10:30 AM.

Burial will take place at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo at 12:30 PM.
