Charles Edd Reeves was born, February 22, 1938, in Headland, Alabama, the eldest son of John Edd and Lillie Mae Reeves. He was reared in Headland, Alabama and graduated Salutatorian from Headland High School in 1956. Charles migrated to New Jersey to pursue his goal of an education and a sustainable career.
While in New Jersey, he graduated from Es County Community College. He met and married the love of his life, Miss Loretha Crews in August of 1966. They began their family with the birth of their daughter, Lorraine Elyse.
In 1972, Charles, Loretha, and Lorraine returned to their home state of Alabama. Their family continued to grow with the addition of their son, Charles Kareem Reeves. Upon returning to Alabama, Charles and his family joined the generations of the Reeves family in worship and service at Saint Peter African Methodist Episcopal Church in Headland, Alabama.
Charles served as a Steward, Sunday School Superintendent, Choir Member, and all other church operations. Later, the Reeves family moved to Stringer Street African Methodist Episcopal Church in Dothan, Alabama where Charles served as a Steward, Gospel Choir Member and President, Church Bus Driver, President of the Lay Organization, Building Fund, the Famous Stringer Street Kitchen at the Peanut Festival, and Bible Class Teacher. He LOVED participating in the Annual Church Spelling Bee Contest and took great pride in winning!
In addition to the local church, Charles served as the President of the Dothan-Eufaula District Lay Organization, South Conference Lay Third Vice President and the Southeast Conference Lay Chaplain. As Chaplain of the Southeast Conference Lay Organization, he loved planning his Hymns for the Devotional Services. In addition, he was a delegate to a host of Ninth Episcopal District Annual Lay Conventions and Connectional Lay Biennials.
He had a great love for the Lay Organization on all levels. His career included three years of service in the United States Army. Charles combined 35 years of Postal Service with East Orange, New Jersey and the Dothan, Alabama and retired in 1993.
He also retired from the Dothan Transit Authority where he lovingly transported the citizens of Dothan to local schools, medical appointments and after school programs. Charles was preceded in death by his wife: Loretha Reeves; his parents, John Edd and Lillie Mae Reeves, and his brother, Johnny Mack Reeves. He leaves to celebrate his life and miss his presence, his daughter, Lorraine Elyse Reeves; his son, Charles (Kecia) Reeves, and his grandson, Charles E. Reeves; his sister and brother, Mae Rietta and Jimmy (Shanika) Reeves, his sister-in-law, Johnnie Mae Reeves, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws in Dothan, Alabama and Buffalo, New York; special friends, Mr. James and Mrs. Gracie Roberts; Mr. Jeremiah and Mrs. Gracie Lee Alexander; Mr. Charles and Mrs. Bernella Rose; the Gospel Choir of Stringer Street; and the entire Stringer Street African Methodist Episcopal Church family.
