Charles R. Powell, age 92, passed away peacefully August 15, 2018 in the late evening at home in Cold Spring, New York. Born November 1, 1925 in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, he was the son of the late Charles V. Powell and Edna (Cooper) Powell. He was predeceased by his brother, Glenn Powell.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 70 years, Mary, and his three children: Charles Powell, Mary (Powell) Bishop, and Mike Powell; four grandchildren: Michael Powell, David Powell, Jaime Bishop, and Robert Bishop; two great grandchildren: Meagan and Michael; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his loving sister, Rosemary Vreeland of Michigan. In 1942, he proudly signed up to serve in the United States Navy.

During his 20 year service, he served on cruisers and tenders, and finished his career on the USS Robert E Lee nuclear submarine in New London, Connecticut, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer in 1962. He enjoyed sharing his naval experiences with friends and family and always looked forward to attending the USS Salem and USS Robert E Lee reunions. He then was employed at Con Edison in Buchanan, New York for 25 years where he was hired as a Chief Electronics Technician and retired as a Senior Watch Supervisor.

He was a member of the Cold Spring Boat Club, the Southern NY Beagle Club, the Garrison Fish and Game Club, and the Southern Dutchess and Putnam Sportsmen’s Association. He was a nature enthusiast who enjoyed hunting and fishing and always had a good hunting dog by his side. He was a lover of the great outdoors and enjoyed co-piloting a Piper Seminole with his buddy Frank.

He was a voracious reader who loved reading political, historical, and hunting books. He always appreciated a good joke – his gregarious chuckle and witty sense of humor will be missed by all. In November when the wild Canadian geese fly over, you will be remembered.

“Here he lies where he longed to be; Home is the sailor, home from the sea, And the hunter home from the hill”. — Excerpt from the poem, Requiem, by Robert Louis Stevenson A private Cremation took place at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
