Charlotte’s Obituary Charlotte Beth Shockey passed from this life on Sunday, May 19, 2019 at her home of Chickasha. She was 89 years of age. Mom was born August 16, 1929 to Parker Alton and Elizabeth Lee Norton (Locke) in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the second of four children.
During her early years, while still living at home, mom also resided in Prairie Valley, Excelsior, and Prague where her father, Parker, taught VoAg in high school and returned to Stillwater when her dad asked to set up the Stillwater High School’s VoAg department. Her mom, Elizabeth, was a school teacher and homemaker. After graduating from Stillwater High School in 1947, Mom enrolled at Oklahoma A&M University where she majored in (secretarial studies) and pledged Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.
It was during those years she med Dad, who was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity studying animal husbandry, on a blind date. Even though mom had never lived on a farm, she had a long-standing contact with agriculture through her father’s vocational agriculture work. She vowed that she would never marry a farmer.
Then she med Dad, and the rest, as they say, is history. After graduation in 1950, Mom married Dad (Windell R. Shockey) on January 13, 1951, in Stillwater. During the early years of their marriage, mom and dad lived in Oklahoma City and Guthrie before deciding to move to Chickasha where dad joined his parents on the family farm and ranch.
From that point forward, mom dedicated herself to her family. Growing up in a rural area in the 1950’s and 60’s, we kids never knew what it was like to not have a parent at home when we came home from school. At the time, we did not realize how lucky we were.
There were always three hot meals on the table, every day without exception; hamburgers on Friday night, fried chicken, potato salad, and baked beans for Saturday dinner, and pot roast on Sunday. Mom would tell you her hobbies included needlepoint and serving as 4-H Club leader, but more than that, she was our 4-H Club leader. While we kids found our club work to be fun, social, and a way to stay busy, mom saw it as an opportunity for further education, recognition, the ability to travel and to earn scholarships to help pay for education.
Charlotte has been an active member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Chickasha since 1952, which she has served through her participation in the United Methodist Women, Susanna Wesley circle, and the Soroses Study Club, among other organizations. She was named an Honorary Lt. Colonel under Governor Roy Turner, and served on Oklahoma’s first multi-county grand jury for two years in the Western District Court in Oklahoma City, as well as several juries in Grady County.
Mom is preceded in death by her parents, Parker and Elizabeth; her husband Windell; her brother Frank Norton and sister Katherine Carlisle. She is survived by her younger brother, Ronald L. Norton and his wife, Sharye, of Greensborough, NC; her two children, Larry Shockey and his partner, Loy, of San Francisco, CA; and Melinda Bookout and her husband, Robert, of Oklahoma City, OK; and Melinda’s two children, Robert Johnson and his wife, Paige, of Oklahoma City, OK; and Jennifer Johnson of Dallas, TX.
