Obituary for Claire Jackson Loomis Anna Claire Jackson Loomis, age 96, died on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at Wood Village in Sweetwater. She was born in Wilson County, Tennessee on January 21, 1922, to James Moody and Edith Turbeville Jackson. She grew up in Lebanon, Tennessee and was a graduate of Cumberland University.
She married Alfred Connor Loomis on December 25, 1941. Claire moved with her family to Sweetwater in 1956 and began a 28 year career in the Sweetwater City School System, beginning her teaching in sixth grade, moving to eighth grade English, and retiring in 1984 from the position of Supervisor of Education. After retirement, she devoted her time to her family, church activities and working with her husband in their flower and vegetable gardens.
She loved crossword puzzles and diagramming sentences. She was a long time member, Sunday School teacher and choir member at the First Baptist Church in Sweetwater. In later life it gave her great joy to meet and be recognized by many of her former students who often told her how much they had benefited from her teaching.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her sister, Marian Segars. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law Dr. James C. Loomis and Patricia, Jerry L. Loomis and Alison; daughter and son-in-law Betsy Loomis Rotters and Larry; granddaughters and grandsons-in-law Dr. Jennifer Loomis Huff and Michael, Dr. Diana Loomis Munger and Scott, Lauren Rotters Kolter and Rev. Jared Kolter; grandchildren Emily Loomis and Michael Bergen; great-grandchildren Nicole and Colin Huff, Lilia and Grant Munger, and Della, Jovie, and Jack Kolter.
The family will receive friends at Kyker Funeral Home in Sweetwater on Saturday, May 5th from 1:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. followed by a funeral service at 2:00 P.M. in Kyker’s chapel with Dr. Frank Crawford officiating. Interment will be at Sweetwater Memorial Gardens following the service. Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Sweetwater or to Sweetwater Area Ministries.
