Cornelius (Connie) J. Murphy of Lakeville died peacefully on January 6, 2019 following a period of declining health. Born in Fall River on September 24, 1925, Cornelius was the son of Cornelius and Rose (King) Murphy. He is survived by his wife Doris (Poirier) Murphy.

Formerly of Taunton, Connie and Doris resided in Lakeville for the past thirty-eight years. Enlisting in the Navy in the summer of 1943, Cornelius served on the Battleship USS Nevada, in both the European and Pacific theatres. In 2014, he received the French Legion of Honor award in recognition of his service at D-Day in Normandy, France.

His Pacific service included the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa shortly before the end of World War II in 1945. He was honorably discharged in July of 1946 at the age of 20. He was a member of the American Legion Post 121 in Berkley, MA.

After serving our Country, Connie attended and graduated from Providence College, Class of 1951. In 1952, he established the C.J. Murphy Insurance Agency in Taunton, which he owned and operated for forty-four years. During this time, he was lead insurance agent and safety director for the City of Taunton.

He was still active with his business for several years after its sale. As well as his wife, he is survived by his loving daughter, Kathleen Murphy of Plymouth, step-children Colleen (Murphy) Vandeventer and her husband William of North Attleboro, Timothy Murphy and his wife Darlene of Taunton and Daniel Murphy and his wife Linda of Soldotna, Alaska; also his sister Elaine Coleman and brother Michael Murphy, both of Attleboro and his grandchildren Eric Vandeventer of West Dundee, Illinois and Alix Vandeventer of Seattle, Washington, Krystal Nelson of Anchorage, Alaska and Jesse Correia of Taunton; and great grandchildren Carter Nelson of Anchorage, Alaska and Savian Correia of Taunton. Visitation will take place on Friday January 11, 2019 from 9:00 – 10:30 AM in the Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home, 280 Bedford St., Lakeville, MA followed by a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM in St. John Neumann Church in East Freetown.
