Dan L. Combites, 77, of Moline, formerly of Orion, passed away at New Perspectives Assisted Living, Silvis, IL, on Friday, April 27, 2018. He had courageously battled a non-cancerous brain tumor for 10 years. He is survived by his immediate family: wife, Jean, sons Andy, New Brighton, MN, and Tim, Orion; and grandchildren, Taylor and Elliot Combites, New Brighton, MN.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at Orion United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 2, 2018 also at Orion United Methodist Church. Cremation rites have been accorded, per his wishes.

Inurnment will be at Western Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Orion United Methodist Church or a favorite charity. Dan was born in Bushnell, IL, September 17, 1940, the son of Joe and Lillian Nelson Combites.

He graduated from Bushnell Prairie City High School in 1958. Dan worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad out of Savanna, WGEN Radio, Geneseo, Turn-Style stores in the Quad Cities and Chicago area, and retired from John Deere Harvester Works in 2001 after 25 years of service. He proudly served in the US Army from 1961-1964.

He married Jean Sundberg on June 21, 1969 in Geneseo. His interests included family road trips and vacations to many National Parks, reading, and bicycling. He participated in many week-long bicycle trips, including RAGBRAI.

His travel highlight was a 3-week trip to Germany in 1999 to visit ancestral relatives and villages. Dan was a proud member of Orion United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School for many years, both High School and Adult classes. He also served on various church boards and committees during his 40 years living in Orion.

Among additional survivors include his siblings Larry (Ruth) Combites, Havana, Tom (Marilee) Combites, Avon, Marjorie (Kevin) Smith, Darien, Nell Manuel, Roseville, Frank (Maureen) Combites, Norman, OK; and a sister in law, Linda Combites, Macomb. Also surviving are his sister/brother-in-law, Janet (Kevin) Bishop, Harbor Springs, MI. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, John Combites, two infant sisters, parents-in-law, Howard and Mildred (Olson) Sundberg, and brother-in-law, Bill Dugan. Memories may be shared online by visiting esterdahl.com.
