Lexington – David Paul Langley, 60, passed away Friday June 29, 2018 at UK Medical Center. He was born in Michigan on April 18, 1958 to the late L.D. Langley and Elsie Quillen Binion. A BIG FAT LIFE.
That is what David represents to all that really knew him. There was no in between, no maybe, no gray area. David lived an emphatic existence.
It took you about less than one minute of conversation to learn that ‘if you didn’t want to know…don’t ask him’. Fearless; no-holds-barred- livin’. … Read More » David ran hot; white-lightning hot.
From the Summer of his 14th year, when he stayed with his older brother and learned about hippies and getting a rock and roll band ready to go on tour, (and chicks)…he found his passion – MUSIC and “that” life. He never looked back and was a rock star at the music club business. David played in several of his own bands, followed his friends and their bands, and helped other people become or form bands.
Eventually, that lead to a long term collaborative relationship with J.D. McHargue and Doug Breeding, together, they co-created a life-long dynasty of building trendsetting music venues where everyone could gather to indulge their mutual love and need for musical immersion. Big, familiar names, like –Breeding’s, The Blue Moon, Sundance, High Rollers, The Roxy, to the presently ultra-cool and jammin’ Henry Clay’s Pub. David gained notoriety along the way, which is perfectly reflected in his endearing, adopted moniker, Grumpy.
With an exterior that could rival any porcupine and a heart as big as the ocean, this walking dichotomy of a man could ,in the span of a single minute, make someone shudder in their shoes while gently helping a person with mental illness sing along to a pre-recorded CD at a fundraising event where he donated his time and equipment. He was a philanthropist. He was a mentor to young, aspiring musicians.
He was a sounding board for old musicians. He was complicated. He loved deeply.
He was fiercely loyal. He was husband. He was Dad.
He was Papaw. He was strong (ask anyone who got on the wrong side of Bouncer Grumpy). He was a helluva cook and loved to make naked-beer-can-chickens-with-bacon necklaces ‘dance’ while grilling them…so sicko funny!
His Uncle Grumpy’s Butt Rub would make a jack rabbit hug a hound when you slathered it on any kind of meat – and yes he loved him some meat! David/Grumpy was so much, so big, so, so… well… him-that it is hard to imagine the loss of his physical presence. Everyone that knew him thought he was invincible.
He was the bass line to the groove of our lives. He held the song together–steadfastly just… kick-ass there. Never missed a lick.
There is one thing David isn’t, and never will be, though…and that is… gone…or dead because he will never be forgotten and music never dies. David is survived by his wife, Linda Reed Langley, daughter, Jessica Lynn Langley-Brabham (Jason), son, David Andrew Langley, sister, Sue (Herb) Page, brothers, Jerry (Betty) Sharp, William (Kelly) Gunning, grandchildren, Nathan Jay Brabham and Kaylee Elizabeth Saunders. A Gathering of Family and Friends will be Sunday, July 8, 2018 from 2:00 PM- 5:00 PM at Clark Legacy Center, Brannon Crossing.
