OBITUARY Dean Flenniken Reeves March 28, 1922 – July 14, 2018 Waynesville-Dean Flenniken Reeves, 96, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, July 14, 2018, at the Charles George VA Hospice Center. Dean was born in Spring Creek in a section known as Bee Branch on March 28, 1922, to the late Homer and Lou Askew Reeves. Dean was a true “Mountain Man” growing up on Spring Creek where he farmed, fished, and went to school before beginning his career with Dayco Southern.
There were many nights when the snow or rain would make its way through the shape shingles of the old home and fall on the straw tick beds where the family slept. There was never any electricity in his parent’s old house until the family built a new home on the Spring Creek Flats; which was one of the first to be wired for electricity. However, electricity was never available until after Dean had returned home from World War II.
While growing up on Spring Creek he met the love of his life, Emma Price. They both attended Spring Creek School where as a young man he coached the boys and girls basketball teams, boxed, and drove the school bus. When World War II began for the United States, Dean honorably served in the U.S. Army with the 202nd Anti-Aircraft Battalion in the Philippine’s and Leyte Gulf.
He achieved the rank of T-5. After the war, Dean, returned to work at Dayco where he eventually retired as a Research and Development Lab Technician with over 43 years of service. Dean was, a kind, loving and humble man of God.
He loved his church and church family. He served the church in multiple roles and sang with several gospel quartets over the years. Dean will be remembered as a strong, humble and wonderful man, who loved his family and friends.
He was a true veteran, and one of God’s Angels here on earth. In addition to his parents, Dean was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Emma Price Reeves; brothers, Clyde and Ernest Reeves; and sister, Agnes Reeves Kirkpatrick. Dean is survived by his son, Roger Reeves and his wife, Sylvia; and a grandson, Daniel Reeves.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, July 22, in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations with the Pastor Chris Willett officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park with funeral honors provided by the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:30 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.
The family would like to offer a word of thanks to his caregiver, Daphene Miller, and the doctors, nurses and staff at the John F. Keever Solace Center and the Charles George VA Hospice Center for the compassionate care given to Dean. The family would also like to thank the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office for rendering funeral honors in lieu of the military. The family asked that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Charles George VA Hospice Center or the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office Drill Team.
