Deanna Margaret Aikman, July 12, 1958 — April 09, 2018

Obituary for Deanna Margaret Aikman Deanna Margaret Aikman (nee Gutheil) passed away peacefully in her Ann Arbor, Michigan home with her children and family members by her side. In the same way they came into this world together, her twin brother Dean strummed on his guitar and the family sang as she left this world. Deanna was born in Regina Saskatchewan in 1958 to Floyd and Melrose Gutheil.

She was the only girl of 7 children. She always loved music, eventually obtaining her masters in piano at the Indiana University Jacob’s School of Music. There she met her husband, composer Jamie Aikman from Indianapolis.

Deanna was close to obtaining her PhD when her first daughter Elise was born. Joshua and Grace followed. Deanna loved being a mother more than anything and wanted many more children.

Unfortunately when Grace was just 9 months old, Deanna was diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease. She handled the diagnosis and debilitating disease with such grace and courage that she touched the lives of everyone she met. Deanna was passionate about her Catholic faith and became an activist for pro-life causes.

She was a force of nature living with such joy despite insurmountable adversity. She was determined to see her children grow up, and she did. To the wonderful community who have helped the Aikman family for more than 20 years, we are forever grateful and so was Deanna.

You helped make the wonderful, fulfilling life she had possible. A funeral Mass will be held for Deanna M. Aikman on Friday, April 13, 2018, 1:30 pm at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, located on 530 Elizabeth St, Ann Arbor, MI 48104. A private burial will follow.
