Obituary for Elinor June Brown Brown, Elinor June, Ypsilanti – 6/21/35 – 5/7/18 “The real heroes in this world are not movie stars, business tycoons and professional athletes. Rather they are the average Joes and Janes who painstakingly and clumsily plod through life, trying to better themselves, while gently sowing seeds of kindness, hope, and love”. (author unknown) June was a real hero.

She walked into Jesus’ arms on May 7th, 2018, at the Residence of Arbor Hospice. Born June 21, 1935 in Princess Anne, MD to Herman and Lillian (Ruark) Denston, June grew up in an orphanage at an early age because of her father’s untimely death. June understood the unfairness and inequality of life.

Because of her love for the Lord, she used these experiences to create her life of serving others. June was an active member of her church in Ann Arbor, serving as church secretary for 15 years. She also taught Sunday School, sang in the church choir, and assisted as needed as pianist and organist.

She volunteered with Washtenaw County Social Services for 13 years, becoming friend to many of those she served. Moving to Mt Dora, FL, in 1997 upon her husband’s retirement didn’t retire June. She volunteered weekly in two different elementary schools as school librarian, served her church in Florida as church librarian as well, and sang in the choir and played piano for the congregation when needed.

She was nominated and received a National Jefferson Award for Community Service. June was an accomplished musician, and artist, and a published author. Her biggest accomplishment however, are the acts of service and kindness to all those whom came in contact with her.

June impacted so many more people than she ever knew and her legacy will forever live in our memories. June is survived by her children Ron (Rachel) Brown of Ypsilanti, Barb (Claude) Orr of Dayton OH, Paul Brown (and companion Amy Racine) of Marquette, and James (Fona) Brown of Ypsilanti, grandchildren Zachary (Rachel), Lillian (Ricky), Alexis (Brian), Jesse, Joshua (Megan), and Alicia, and four great-grandchildren, Jonah, Jayden, Simon, and Amir. She is also survived by her brother Harvey Dale Denston, and Carole Rack, both of Philadelphia, PA, several nieces and nephews, and former son-in-law Charles Moore.

She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Robert G. Brown, to whom she was married for 62 years. Also preceded by her parents, and her brother and sister, Eddie Denston, and Hilda Northrup. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 11th, at the Nie Funeral Home on Carpenter Rd, Ann Arbor, from 6 to 8pm.

Visitation will also be held Saturday, May 12th, 10am at Crossroads Community Baptist Church, Ann Arbor, preceding an 11am celebration of her life. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Residence of Arbor Hospice for their support and care. Memorial contributions can be made to Arbor Hospice or the Humane Society of Huron Valley.
