Mr. Matthew D. “Don” Horn, age 80, of the Pleasant Gardens community, passed away on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at the CarePartners Solace Center in Asheville following a brief period of declining health. A native of Cleveland County, Don was born on January 4, 1938 to the late J. D. Horn and Jeanette Miller Horn. A graduate of Piedmont High School, he also attended Appalachian State.

He soon married the love of his life, Barbara Waters Horn and they lived in Forest City for a short time before moving to Pleasant Gardens. He owned Horn Motor Company in Marion for many years and made many friends and loyal customers. Don was a faithful and very active member of Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church and served there as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher.

He thoroughly enjoyed attending the Fishers of Men Sunday School Class and was actively involved with the ramp building team. His involvement in community affairs included volunteering in the PG Volunteer Fire Department where he was a past Chief, Assistant Chief, and officer. He joined the department in 1960 and was instrumental in helping to raise the funds needed for their first fire truck.

Don was especially proud of the impact the PG Ruritan Club, of which he was a member, had on the children in the community. He was also a Mason in the Joppa Lodge #401 in Old Fort. He enjoyed fishing, golf and tennis and anyone who knew him could tell you that he was a diehard Carolina fan.

Don leaves behind, in addition to Barbara, his wife of 60 years, three loving daughters, Lynn Horn Sessoms of Tryon, Jill Horn Rhoney of Newton, and Carol Horn Davis of Marion; a sister, Vangette Horn White and husband Joe of Lawndale; five beloved grandchildren, Wesley, Ethan, Matthew, Meredith, and Ella; and his sweet great-granddaughter, Clementine. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, June 24, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at PG Baptist Church with Rev. Coy Jeans officiating.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Flowers are appreciated, however, those wishing to make a memorial contribution in his memory should consider the Fishers of Men Sunday School Class at 214 PG Baptist Church Road, Marion, NC 28752.
