Donald Elwood Hitchens Jr. was born on May 20, 1937 in Millsboro, Delaware. He was the son of the late Donald and Isabelle Hitchens Sr. In the warmth of his home surrounded by family, he departed this life on Sunday, February 24, 2019. He received his early education in Millsboro, Delaware.

Donald retired in 2000 from the Farming Division of Townsends Inc. as a farmer after 49 years of service. Donald, “Duckman”, as he was affectionately known loved spending his free time outdoors tinkering on broken equipment, buying junk from people who needed money when they fell on hard times, riding to get his coffee and lottery tickets, watching westerns, playing his guitar, and listening to music. Years ago, Fats Domino came to Rosedale Beach (currently Gull Point in Long Neck, Delaware) which Donald heard him sing.

His favorite song was Blueberry Hill. Donald attended the Pentecostal Church of God in Millsboro, Delaware occasionally with his daughters. When he couldn’t attend church, he would listen to preachers on the television.

He loved spending time with family especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents: Donald and Isabelle Hitchens; one brother: Leroy Hitchens; four sisters: Mildred Norwood, Betty Peacock, Jennie Hargett, Catherine Soil; one grandchild: Kiwanis Burton. He is survived by his six children: Avery Harmon (fiancé Paula Mosley) of Harrington, DE; Valarie Wright (Ricky) of Seaford, DE; Titus Burton of Lewes, DE; Donna Reid (James) of Millsboro, DE; Gina Burton of Millsboro, DE; and Anthony Burton of Comstock, NY; one sister: Corrine Sammons of Millsboro, DE; 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Friday, March 1, 2019 at the Pentecostal Church of God, 27071 Bethesda Road, Millsboro, DE 19966, where friends may call from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM for viewing and visitation. Burial will follow privately at Milford Community Cemetery in Milford, DE. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the American Lung Association, Donation Processing Ctr, P.O. Box 7000, Albert Lea, MN 56007-8001.
