Donald R. Cox December 28, 1925 – May 22, 2018 Donald R. Cox, 92, of Sheridan, Indiana passed away on May 22, 2018. Don was born on December 28, 1925 to the late Claude A. and Mary (Ferguson) Cox in Terhune, Indiana. Don graduated from Sheridan High School in the Class of 1944.

During high school Don played football and basketball. He had a natural athletic talent which allowed him to start on both sports teams his freshman year and continued through his senior year. After all of the commitment to his teams, he earned a football scholarship to Central Normal College in Danville, Indiana.

Don attended college for one year and returned home to manage the family farm which he continued for the next 65 years. Since football was a passion, he played with semi-pro football team traveling to various towns and cities. Don fell in love with Betty Rawlings and the two were married on May 9, 1947.

They remained at each other’s side always. Betty preceded Don in death in 2015. Don and Betty were married for 68 inspiring years.

Don loved serving his community. He served many years as a Trustee for Marion Township in Sheridan. Don was a lifelong member of the Sheridan Lions Club where provided the role of past-president and donated countless hours volunteering his time to his community.

Don was actively involved with the Boone County 4-H program where he served as an announcer for the swine show as well as served on the pork producer’s board. Many 4-H summers he continued to donate his time wherever help was needed. Don enjoyed spending his free time fishing; however, he especially cherished traveling with Betty and their friends to Branson, Missouri.

While on their jaunts together, they would have valuable conversation and take in many shows. Don had never met a stranger. He thoroughly cherished talking to people and loved sharing stories.

Don was a proud father to three beautiful children, whom will greatly miss him, two sons; Brian (Donna) Cox, Rick (Barbara) Cox, and his loving daughter, Cheryl Inman. Don adored being a grandfather to his six grandchildren; Kelly (Doug) Heugerich, Ryan (Lori) Cox, Jeff (Kristyn) Inman, Greg (Brianne) Inman, Justin (Sarah) Cox, Caitlin (Nathan) Whisler. He was a proud great-grandfather to seven.

He is survived by his sister, Hildreth Bagwell. Preceding Don in death are brother, Gifford Cox and sister, Margaret Purciful. Don’s funeral services will be held on Tuesday May 29, 2018 at the Terhune United Methodist Church, 8392 North Washington St., Sheridan, IN.

Family and friends are invited to gather from 11 am to 2 pm at the church. A funeral service will be held at 2 pm at the Terhune United Methodist Church. Reverend Frank Ciampa will be officiating Don’s service.

Burial will follow at Crown View Cemetery in Sheridan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Terhune United Methodist Church, 8392 North Washington St. 2St. Sheridan, Indiana, 46069 or The Sheridan Lion Club, 508 E. 6th St., Sheridan, Indiana, 46069. Online condolences: fisherfunerals.com.
