Donald “Don” W. Burnett, 70, of Newton died and was an organ donor on Monday, April 30, 2018, at the Iowa Veteran’s Hospital in Des Moines. A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Friday, May 4, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will be held at a later date at the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery in Van Meter.

Memorials to the Iowa Veteran’s Hospital may be left at the funeral home. Don, the son of Harold and Dorothy (Dimmick) Burnett, was born on June 10, 1947 in Tempe, Arizona. As a young boy he moved to Illinois where he was raised and then graduated from Brown County High School.

From 1965-1969, Don served his country in the United States Marine Corp during the Vietnam War. He received a Purple Heart Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and many other military honors. During part of his time in the military, Don was stationed in Massachusetts where he met Patricia Clouse and they were later married on July 1, 1973.

After being discharged, Don and Pat lived in both Colorado and Illinois before making their home in Iowa in 1982. Don worked as an Owner Operator Semi-Truck Driver. He enjoyed both camping and fishing.

Don was a member of the American Legion Post 111. Don is survived by his wife, Patricia Burnett of Newton; children, Wesley Burnett of Newton, Lindsay (Ken) Daugherty of Monroe, and Jarrod Burnett of Newton; his grandchildren, Nathaniel, Draven, Aubrey, Brianna, Hunter, Xavier, and Skylar; siblings, Gerald Gene (Carol) Burnett, Sharon (Ernie) Gregory, and Charlene Morgan, all of Illinois; his uncle, Charles (Juanita) Dimmick of North Dakota; and aunt, Francis Gotti of Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Charlotte Davidson.
