Obituary for Doris Johnson Doris Johnson Age 81, born to Thomas Bibbs and Georgia Diew Bibbs in Cleveland, Mississippi. Doris graduated from the Cleveland Consolidated High School. Doris moved to Gary in 1958 and found a new church home at Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church which has remained her Church home throughout her life.

She met and married Richard Johnson and their union have been together for over 53 years. Doris received her bachelor’s degree in education from Indiana University Northwest and her Master’s degree from Purdue University. Doris taught reading at Tolleston middle school for 29 years until she retired.

In 1988, Doris joined the Gamma Psi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Doris was recognized as a Silver Star member with over 25 years of service. Doris is preceded in death by both her parents, 5 brothers and sisters. She leaves to mourn her passing her devoted husband Richard, daughter Janice and son-in-law Ben Bennett, Aunt Irene Henley, 5 sisters and 1 brother; special great grandsons Nijel and Reginald, and a host of nieces, nephews, family members and friends.

Visitation will be held Friday, November 2, 2018 from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Smith, Bizzell & Warner Funeral Home, 4209 Grant Street, Gary, IN. Family hours from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 3, 2018 followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. at Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, 1741 Fillmore Street, Gary, IN; Isaac Culver, officiating.
