Doris Louise Ivey, 91 Years, of La Porte, passed away on Sunday, September 23, 2018 at Sacred Heart Living By The Creek in Northampton, PA. Doris was born in La Porte, IN, on December 7, 1926 to John Francis and Edith Mae (Culp) Hewitt. On March 23, 1946 in La Porte, IN, she married Harland B. Ivey who preceded her in death.
Surviving are her beloved children, Rev. Jack L. (Carol) Ivey of Bethlehem, PA and Thomas R. Ivey (Donna) of Palm Coast, FL; grandchildren Nicki (Matt) Ivey of Northampton, PA and Brian (Beth) Ivey of Bloomington, IN; and great-grandchildren Donovan and Vivian of Northampton, PA, Larkyn, and Kyle of Bloomington, IN, and Kayla of La Porte, IN; Siblings were Robert Hewitt, Virginia Kessler, William Hewitt, Catherine Hewitt, John Hewitt, Barbara Hough, Shirley Rameier of Mesa, AZ and Charles Hewitt, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her parents, husband, 4 brothers, and 3 sisters.
Doris graduated in 1944 from Rolling Prairie High School and worked at U.S. Slicing Machine Co. which later became Berkel Co She married Harland who also worked there after serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a S. Sgt. and photographer.
They were married fifty years. Doris was a stay-at-home Mom until Jack was in the 9th grade and Tom in 6th grade when she worked as a secretary at Central Jr. High which became Boston for three years, and was promoted to the Educational Service Center doing the corporation’s teacher payroll for twenty-two years when she retired. Things Doris and Harland enjoyed so much was their Social Club with a group of friends from Slicers having snacks at someone’s home then a dancing party.
They had company for dinner Sundays or were invited to friends’ homes. She loved to cook, bake and can fruits and made jelly and jam. Doris’s “44 Club” girls met the fourth Wednesday of the month until the past several years.
Doris was a former member of Business Girls, Rose Rebekkah Lodge. She served 24 years as a La Porte Hospital Volunteer. Hospital Volunteering was such a blessing for her to do every Monday.
She received much more than she ever gave and loved it! A celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 AM (CST) on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center. A time of Visitation will be held from 4 PM – 7PM (CST) on September 28th and from 10 AM (CST) until the time of the service at the funeral home on Saturday.
Burial will follow the service at Pine Lake Cemetery in La Porte, IN.
