On February 15, 2019 she passed peacefully at the age of 83. She was born to the late Walter Sohnle and Helen Katt in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The New Jersey communities of Iselin, Edison and New Brunswick saw her grow up alongside with her sister Jeannie.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Marco Morazán and her three sons, Marco, Cristian and Neil, as well as her grandson, Walter and her granddaughters Madrid and Skyler. Doris was undoubtedly a trailblazer in many ways. She was the first in her family to attend college and did so at Rutgers University’s Douglass, at a time when few people, and even fewer women, attended college at all.

During this time, she enlisted and did a tour in the U.S. Marine Corps Women’s Reserve and began her lifelong passion in the fields of Education and the Spanish language, literature, & cultures. At a time when travel was difficult and unpredictable, she travelled extensively through Spain and South America, particularly Paraguay and Colombia, where she made lifelong friends. She also travelled extensively through Central America and the Caribbean, always following her passion for teaching both English and Spanish.

After nearly ten years of travels she settled in Honduras, where she met her husband, and was a founding member of two bilingual education schools, The Mayan School and Saint Patrick’s Academy. There she was known and loved as a teacher’s teacher given that she selflessly dedicated herself to her students and to the training of young upcoming teachers. After her many years of journeying, she returned to New Jersey where she taught Spanish in the East Orange School District and English as a second language at Middle County College.

After a long and fruitful 50-year career in education, she retired in 2005. She was an assiduously hard worker, a dedicated teacher and a caring, loving mother and wife that will be sorely missed by her family and by the many students whose life’s she touched and whom she inspired to strive for excellence. Her life exemplifies a definition of dedication, devotion, and integrity, which made her a wonderful human being throughout her entire life.

Her legacy lives on in the many lives she changed for the better. You will be sorely missed Grandma!
