Cumberland – Dorothy A. “Bunny” (Beck) Ballou, 83, of Cumberland and formerly of Greenville, passed away peacefully Sunday, September 2, 2018 at Brookdale Cumberland surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late George A. Ballou, Jr. Born in Brattleboro, VT, a daughter of the late William H. and Eva Dorothy (Lenz) Beck, she had lived in New Hampshire before coming to Rhode Island upon her marriage in 1954, and resided most of her life in Greenville and Cumberland. Mrs. Ballou worked as a scheduler at the Rhode Island Eye Institute for over 20 years and as a buyer at the former New York Lace Store.

She was a graduate of Stevens High School in Claremont, NH and attended Colby Jr. College in New London, NH where she studied nursing. She volunteered at the RI Summer Special Olympics, Woonsocket Adopt-A-Family and the Women’s Group at Greenville Baptist Church Thrift Store. She loved skiing, skating and snowmobiling, and was a former member of the Blackstone Valley Snowmobile Club.

She loved spending time with family and friends, collecting antiques, reading, spending several winters in Florida, and traveling with her sister around the world. She is survived by one son, Geoffrey A. Ballou and his wife, Deborah, and one daughter, Linda Deschenes and her husband, Richard, all of Cumberland; one sister, Florence B. “Becky” Kurdle of Annapolis, MD; two granddaughters, Sarah Vaudrain and Shannon Ballou; and eight nieces and nephews. Her service will be held Friday, September 7 at 11 A.M. at Bellows Funeral Chapel, 160 River Road, Lincoln.

Her burial will be private in Union Cemetery, North Smithfield. Calling Hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Ballou’s memory to the Arthritis Foundation, 2348 Post Road #104, Warwick, RI 02886 or to RI Special Olympics, 370 George Washington Highway, Smithfield, RI 02917 would be appreciated.
