Dorothy’s Obituary Dorothy “Dot” Jane Woods January 23, 1928 – February 21, 2019 She stepped on shore and found Heaven! She touched a hand and found it God’s! She breathed new air and found it celestial!
She woke up in glory and found home! On Thursday, February 21, 2019 at Our Lady of Peace, Lewiston, New York, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Dorothy Jane Parkes Woods joined her husband in Heaven. Dorothy and her still born twin, Mary Ann, were born at home on January 23, 1928, two of ten children to Franklin and Estella (Sones) Parkes in Waddle, Pennsylvania.
Dorothy began working at a young age doing housework and watching children for neighbors to help her mother with family expenses. In the spring of 1944, she began working for Titan Metal in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania where she was the quintessential Rosie the Riveter. There, she caught the eye of and met her husband, of 71 years, Kenneth George Woods, Sr
Their first date was VE Day, May 8, 1945. Ken and Dot went to lunch together and married four months later on September 8, 1945. Along with her husband, Dorothy raised seven children.
She cleaned, laundered, cooked, canned and, along with other goodies, baked eighteen loaves of bread a week. She was a strong, hard working, independent lady who raised strong, hard working, independent children who are also devoted to their families. Dorothy was a long-time member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Niagara Falls and was a charter member of the Arcade Crossroads Church of the Nazarene in Arcade, New York.
When she wasn’t busy with her own family you could find her teaching Sunday school, helping with church programs and Vacation Bible School, or hosting a Bible study in her home. Dottie dreamed of a retirement home – a cabin in the woods – and Ken made sure her dream came true. They found a beautiful setting on Riceville Road in West Valley, New York.
In the summer of 1982 their log cabin was built by the family. She loved her cabin and spent hours planting and caring for flowers and the birds that surrounded it. In later years, she was frustrated by her immobility and illness often said and dreamed that one day she would ‘fly away’.
Dorothy is pre-deceased by her parents, four brothers, five sisters, beloved son-in-law Wayne Koch, and many extended family members.
