Obituary for Dorothy L. Furney (Jones ) Dorothy Louise “Dot” Furney passed away under hospice care at her home with family attending on Thursday, November 15th, 2018, following a brief illness. Born in Baltimore to Louise and Mel Jones on February 9, 1942, Dot spent her early years in her beloved Dundalk, where lifelong friendships were formed. Her family moved to nearby Rosedale when Dot was in the ninth grade and in 1960, she graduated from Kenwood High School.

In 1964, Dot graduated from Frostburg University with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. She spent the next 15 years teaching Reading and English in Baltimore and Carroll County schools, fulfilling her childhood dream to become a teacher. In 1982, Dot earned a second Master’s degree in Family Systems Therapy from the University of North Florida and upon returning to Maryland in 1985, she began working for Baltimore County as an elementary school guidance counselor.

It was in this position that she experienced the greatest satisfaction of her career. During the next 15 years she touched the lives of her students and families, applying therapy techniques with a compassionate heart (and lots of puppets). In retirement, Dot loved her Carroll Vista community, especially spending time at the pool with friends, joining clubs, dining out, and traveling.

Remembered for her wonderful sense of humor, her love of animals and music, her generous spirit and beautiful smile, she will be dearly missed. Dot is survived by her husband and best friend of 39 years, Robert “Bob” Furney. Her three children are David Leasure (Kimberly), Denise Connolly (Kevin) and Douglas Leasure (Sara).

Dot also has two stepchildren from Bob’s earlier marriage: Fred Furney and Monica Goldstone (Andy). Dot was very proud of all her children and the nine grandchildren that survive her. Her grandchildren include Kylan, Cassia and Khelsa Connolly, Gregory Leasure, Nathaniel and Andrew Leasure, Alec and Nikki Goldstone, and Stella Furney.

Also missing her is her precious dog Maggie. A celebration of Dot’s life will be held Friday November 23, 2018 at 11 AM at Sandymount UMC, 2101 Old Westminster Pike in Finksburg MD. Family and friends are welcome.
