Dorothy R. DeMatteo, a lifelong resident of East Boston, died peacefully on Tuesday, November 20, at the age of 88. Dorothy was born on August 20, 1930 in East Boston, MA, the daughter of the late Dorothy (Long) of MA and Carl Cristoforo of MA. After graduating from high school, Dorothy attended Chelsea Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in the class of 1950.
She married the love of her life, Carmen A. DeMatteo on February 14, 1953. She was a registered nurse and worked in area hospitals. She was also the Director of Nurses at Columbus Nursing Home in East Boston.
She was a special person with a zest for life. She loved spending time with her large extended family and friends. She loved going to the beach, shopping, and cherished family vacations, especially the time to Nova Scotia.
Dot was a member of the East Boston Sempre Avante Lodge of the Sons of Italy for over 30 years and a past honoree for Woman of the Year. Dorothy was a devoted wife, of the late Carmen A. DeMatteo. Mother of Michael and his wife Dianne of Medford, Carla Pepka and her husband Robert Call of Framingham, Dona and her husband Kenneth Bradley of Stoneham, Darice and her husband Karim Maghsoudi of East Boston and Dana and companion, Petra Ventresca of Wakefield.
Loving grandmother to Venessa, Michelle, Greg, Andrea, Anthony, Samantha, Janelle, Stephen, Matthew, Michael, Alex, Nicole and Victor. Dedicated great-grandmother to Sophia, Nicholas, Michael, Anna, Johnny, Benaiah, Nicholas, Louis, and Nathan. Dear aunt to Dolores Foley and her children Michael, Angela and Christina.
Dear sister of Valerie Prior and her deceased husband Edward, and the late Carl Cristoforo Jr and his surviving wife Domenica all of Wellesley. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Family and friends will honor Dorothy’s life by gathering at the Ruggiero Family Memorial Home 971 Saratoga St., East Boston on Monday November 26th from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and again on Tuesday morning at 9:30AM before leaving in funeral procession to St. Joseph – St. Lazarus Church 59 Ashley St., East Boston for a 11:00 AM Funeral Mass in celebration of Dottie’s life.
She was a friend to all. Dorothy was very generous with her time and talents. A true giver in every way, she especially liked having everyone over her house and sharing stories about each other’s lives.
