Obituary for Dorothy Wilson Letchford Dorothy Letchford Augusta, Ga – Dorothy Eileen (Wilson) Letchford, 83, originally of Toronto, Canada, and a longtime resident of Augusta GA, passed away in Kijabe, Kenya where she lived with several of her children. She is survived by her four children, 15 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, each of whom have been richly blessed by her legacy of love. Dorothy was born on August 26, 1934 in Portuguese West Africa (present day Angola) to Gus and Maggie Wilson, growing up with snakes in her granadilla vine and rogue lions around her house.
In 1940 she returned with her parents by boat to Canada, and in 1946 she moved into the Gowen’s Home for Missionary Children when her parents returned to Africa. She graduated from Forest Hills High School and went on to get her RN from Toronto Western Hospital in 1956 and her Bachelors of Theology in 1959 from Toronto Bible College. She married Peter in 1960 and they lived and served together until his death in 2013.
They helped establish the Graduate School of Missions at Columbia Bible College from 1963, they led the Loudonville Community Church (Albany, NY) from 1966 and, in 1980, guided the Hildenborough Evangelistic Trust (England) into new missions opportunities. They moved to join the staff of the First Presbyterian Church (Augusta, GA) in 1995, retiring in 2013. In 2015, Dorothy moved to Kenya to live with two of her children serving at the AIC Kijabe Hospital, where she was actively involved with children living at the Valley Light Children’s Home orphanage until the time of her death.
Dorothy was known for her commitment to God, love of and belief in others, welcoming spirit, grit and curiosity. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 1, 2018 at 1:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church, Augusta.
