Doug Vance, 59, of Spruce Pine, passed away Monday, February 25, 2019. A native of Mitchell County, he was a son of the late Robert “Bob” Vance and Betty Pate Pafford. He was a 1978 graduate of Harris High School and had a long career as a chef at numerous restaurants throughout the United States.

Most recently he was an employee of the NC Department of Public Safety as a Food Service Officer with 14 years service. Doug enjoyed golfing, boating, fishing and cooking. He was very devoted to his mother and stepfather, Betty and Ted Pafford, until their passing.

Surviving are his sister: Lynn Vance Hinshaw and husband, Larry, of Banner Elk; nephew: Jake Hinshaw of Boone; several cousins, aunts, uncles, and his work family at Avery-Mitchell Correctional Institution. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Monday, March 4, 2019, from 5 until 7PM at Grassy Creek Golf Course Restaurant. Because of his big heart and generous nature, the family requests that you honor Doug by making donations in his memory to the Shepherds Staff, P. O. Box 344, Spruce Pine, NC 28777.
