Winterville – Douglas “Doug” Edward Murphy, 92, ascended to the Lord Triumphant, January 11, 2019 after several years of declining health. Doug was born October 17, 1926 in Wilson, NC and grew up there as one of three children. He was predeceased in death by his father William Harvey Murphy, mother Nina Lee Beamon Murphy, brothers Harvey W. Murphy, Carson B. Murphy and son Doug Murphy Jr. In addition to his wife Madoline of 42 years, he is survived by his daughters Peggy Wilson and husband Danny and Gale Barnes and husband Keith, all of Wilson; stepchildren Pam Dawson and husband Ronnie of Gibsonville, Walter R. “Pete” Avery and wife Juanita, of Wilmington and Kim A. Pate and husband David of Winterville; seven grandchildren, Michael Wilson, Mark Wilson and wife, Tiffany, Anna Wilson Brock and husband, Michael, Will Barnes and wife, Christine, Michael Sanderson, Ashley Arnold and Kathryne Avery, six great grandchildren, Lauryn Arnold, Olivia M. Brock, Graham Brock, Kadance Aycock, David Aycock and Luke Wilson.

Doug graduated in 1944 from Tacoma Academy in Tacoma Park, Maryland. He joined the US Navy, serving in World War II. After leaving the Navy, Doug joined his father’s business, Murphy Manufacturing Co. as purchasing agent.

He later became the CEO and General Operating Officer until his retirement after 38 years of dedicated professional service. He was a member of the National Truck Body Association, Elks Club, Exchange Club, Moose Lodge and past president of Winstead United Methodist Men. Doug was an avid sportsman having won the 1972 NCDPA Skeet Championship at Pinehurst Golf & Country Club.

He was a North Carolina Lifetime Sportsman and he greatly enjoyed hunting Bobwhite Quail, Whitetail Deer and waterfowl. He also enjoyed fishing and a good round of golf. Doug was a past member of Winstead UMC in Wilson, Mt.

Zion UMC in Elm City and a current member of Jarvis UMC in Greenville. Doug was a one of a kind man – a deeply devoted husband, father, step father, grand and great grandfather and a good friend to many, especially the men who worked for him at Murphy Manufacturing Company. A Memorial Service will be held on January 19th, 2019 at 11:00am at Farmer Funeral Service, 109 Second Street, Ayden, NC.
