Obituary for Dr. L. Ronald Hurst Dr. Lawrence Ronald “Ron” Hurst, 86, of Spartanburg, SC, died Thursday, September 6, 2018, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Dr. Hurst was born April 21, 1932, in Dott, West Virginia to the late Lawrence and Virginia Bailey Hurst. Ron was a graduate of Matoka High School.

During high school and college he earned the Boy Scout rank of a 3 Palm Eagle Scout. He attended Bluefield College and graduated from Duke University in 1953 and Duke University Medical School in 1957. Ron’s internship was at the U. S. Army Hospital at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

He graduated from the U. S. Air Force School of Aviation Medicine at Randolph Air Force Base and served as a flight surgeon in the U. S. Air Force from 1955-1960. Following his military service, Dr. Hurst completed his residency in Otolaryngology at Duke University Medical Center in 1964. Dr. Hurst moved to Spartanburg to establish a practice in ENT medicine and Head and Neck Surgery.

He co-founded the Spartanburg ENT Head and Neck Surgery Clinic and earned Board Certification from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Active in the Spartanburg medical community, he served on the Executive Committee at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center and as the chief of staff at Doctors Memorial Hospital. Dr. Hurst always wanted to help make medicine better in Spartanburg.

He loved his work in the OR and was a brilliant and fearless surgeon. Countless lives were saved or improved by Dr. Hurst’s medical care. It was not uncommon for him to perform surgery for free if a patient needed it and he did not want to know what insurance his patients had.

Medical organizations that Dr. Hurst was a member of included the S. C. Medical Association, the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the American Academy of Facial, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the Spartanburg County Medical Society. Ron served the Spartanburg Community as well as serving on the boards that founded the Charles Lea Center, the Girls Home, and the Blood Bank. He was a member of the Sertoma Civic Club and the Rotary Club and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg.

Travel was a passion for Ron and he traveled all over the world to many countries with his beloved wife Susie in his retirement years. He was an avid gardener and loved tending to his yard. He loved to ski, spending much time on the slopes at Sugar Mountain, NC.

Ron and Susie loved to ballroom dance and were active in the Shamrock and Palmetto Dance Clubs as well as the Men’s Cotillion Dance Club. Ron is survived by his wife, Susie Hurst, the love of his life. Ron and Susie were married in Spartanburg, SC on August 22, 1987.

He is also survived by daughters, Ann Matthews (Mike) of Michigan, Virginia Bennett (Robert) of Montreat, NC; son, Larry Hurst (Dawne) of Atlanta, GA; and stepdaughter, Lisa Callanan (Kevin) of Stephens City, VA; grandchildren, Christopher Matthews (Gracie) of Austin, TX, Kellyann Anderson (Christopher) of Owensboro, KY, Jerry Bennett of Nashville, TN, Emma Callanan and William Callanan of Stephens City, VA; and great-grandchildren, Anabelle and Adelyn Anderson of Owensboro, KY and Ryden and Reston Matthews of Austin, TX. Family and friends will be received 4:00-6:00 PM Saturday, September 15, 2018, at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. A Celebration honoring Dr. Hurst’s life will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday, September 16, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church, 393 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302, by The Rev.

Joanne R. Hull and The Rev. Dr. Tom Evans. Private committal will be in First Presbyterian Church Columbarium.
