COLE, Edward Sherell; 80, of Mechanicsville, VA went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, February 5, 2019. He was preceded in death by his parents, Holland and Velma Cole. Sherell is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Dorothy Brooks Cole; 3 children, Debra Corley (Joey), Edward “Butch” Cole Jr. (Kande), and Rodney Cole (Jenny); 8 grandchildren, Jay Corley (Nikki), Matthew Corley, Ryan Cole, Krista Cole, Morgan Cole, Turner Cole, Noah Cole, and Teagan Cole; 1 great- grandchild, Harper Corley with another expected in July; a brother, Marshall Cole (PeeWee); sisters Joyce Slaughter (Eddie), and Joan Morgan; a special cousin, Huell Matthews Jr., and many other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Sherell was an avid sports fan. He never missed a Yankees baseball or UVA Cavaliers basketball game. His love of sports was echoed in his devotion to coaching Hanover youth sports for over 20 years.

He served as president of Mechanicsville Little League 30+ years and has a field there named in his honor. During his tenure there he ensured any child that wanted to play was given the chance, even if he paid for it out of his own pocket. Sherell wed his lovely wife at Shady Grove UMC where he was a member for nearly 60 years.

His love of sports was second only to his love and devotion to his family. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather as well as a mentor to many children in the community. The family will receive friends Friday, February 8, 2019 from 4 – 8, at Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Pkwy.

, Mechanicsville, VA 23111. A funeral service will be held 11 am, Saturday, February 9, 2019 at Shady Grove United Methodist Church, 8209 Shady Grove Rd. , Mechanicsville, VA 23111 with interment to follow at Signal Hill Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Shady Grove or to the American Diabetes Association.
