Edward T. Smart, 81, passed peacefully with his family by his side on October 11, 2018. Ed was born in Springfield and was a lifelong resident of West Springfield. Ed proudly served his country in the US Marine Corp.

Ed was a graduate of the former Springfield Trade School. He was a long time Little League Coach and was the Park and Recreation Commissioner. He was an active and passionate member of the Lions Club for 47 years and received a Lifetime Membership Award and the Melvin Jones Award.

Ed owned and operated Twins Express with his brother Richard and previously worked for Johnson Motor Lines and Pilot Freight. Ed loved being a part of Operation Santa. Ed was predeceased by his parents Robert and Frances (Kwiatkowski) Smart and his siblings Robert and Joan Berard.

Ed leaves his loving wife of 58 years Nathalie (Choquette) Smart and his sons Douglas and his wife Donna and Russell and his wife Andrea, both of West Springfield. Ed also leaves his twin brother Richard of Hampden, his sisters, Frances “Babs” Silk and Shirley Ford, both of Springfield and his cherished grandchildren Jessica, Brent and Christopher. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 10am from the Toomey-O’Brien Funeral Home 1043 Westfield St, W. Springfield followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11am at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in West Springfield followed by burial in the MA Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery.

Calling hours will be on Tuesday from 4 – 7pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Ed’s name to Sister Caritas Cancer Center, 271 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff in the Infusion Unit and the entire Oncology staff for their wonderful care.
