Obituary of Edward Evans Sherrill-Edward D. Evans Sr., age 97, formerly of W. Hamilton Ave. passed away late Sunday evening May 6, 2018 in the Iroquois Nursing Home in Jamesville, New York 10 days before his 98th birthday. Ed was born on May 16, 1920 in Schenectady, New York, a son of the late Lemuel and Evelyn (Cagwin) Evans and received his education in the Oneida School System.

On November 19, 1940 Ed and Iva “Jane” Richmond were united in marriage and in Stockbridge, New York and shared that loving vow of sixty-one years together until Jane’s death on March 2, 2002. Ed enlisted in 1944 with the United States Marine Corps, participated in the battle for Iwo Jima, and was honorably discharged in 1945. Prior to his retirement in 1982 Ed was employed as the factory superintendent of Oneida Limited Silversmith where he was employed for over forty-one years.

He was a member of Gethsemane Episcopal Church, one of the organizers of the Durhamville Vets Club, a member of American Legion Post 230 of Sherrill and the Marine Corps League of Oneida. Surviving are five children and their spouses, sons; Edward “Skip” (Sue) Evans of Hamlin, Richard (Lorraine) Evans of Quakertown, PA, Thomas Evans (Ray Wagner) of Colchester, Ct. , daughters, Evelyn (Michael) Small of Port Orchard, WA, and Janet (Donald) Cobb of Oneida, seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

Also surviving is one brother, Donald Evans of Lafayette, several nieces and nephews. Two brothers, L. Gordon Evans of E. Syracuse, and Howard Evans of Lafayette predeceased Ed. Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Ed’s life at a time to be announced at a later date.

The burial of his ashes with military honors will be in Crown Hill Memorial Park, Kirkland, NY, that date also to be announced. In memory of Ed donations may be sent to Gethsemane Episcopal Church, the Durhamville Vets Club or the American Legion Post 230 of Sherrill.
