Eleanor Rose Casey passed from this life on September 11, 2018 after a period of declining health. Eleanor, known throughout her life as Ellie, was born on March 8, 1928, in Holyoke, MA to the late William P. and Margaret (Walsh) Casey. Ellie was a long-time resident of South Hadley, MA.

Ellie attended Holyoke Public Schools, graduated from Holyoke High School in 1946 and earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from Lesley College in Cambridge, MA in 1950. She taught school in Cleveland, OH and Springfield, MA, while continuing her own education, studying Library Science at Our Lady of the Elms College in Chicopee, MA. She retired after a long career as a teacher and librarian, but continued to share her knowledge and expertise, volunteering her time and skills at the Mount Holyoke College Library and the Gaylord Library in South Hadley.

She also remained active in church groups, teaching Catechism in Holyoke and at St. Patrick’s Church in South Hadley, where she regularly attended Mass. Ellie traveled extensively, read voraciously, and was quite knowledgeable in many fields of study including graphic arts, classical music and crafts. Anyone who engaged in conversation with Ellie soon learned she was gifted with a quick wit and stayed quite current on political affairs.

Ellie is survived by her many Doran family cousins, including William Y. Doran, Diane Waldron, Mary Shanahan, Robert H. Doran, Jr, and John J. Doran, and by her brother William Casey and his family. Calling hours are planned for Wednesday, September 19, 2018 from 9:00 -10:15am at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, Holyoke, followed by an 11:00am Mass at St. Patrick’s Church in South Hadley, MA. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
