Elizabeth’s Obituary Elizabeth Ann “Betty” (Beachner) Coomes, 86, of St. Paul, died at 6:32 p.m., Tuesday, March 19, 2019, at the Girard Medical Center in Girard, Kansas. She was born on October 10, 1932 in rural St. Paul, Kansas to John Henry and Rachel Ursula (Bradshaw) Beachner. Betty attended Prairie View Grade School in North Mission Township and graduated from St. Francis High School in 1950.
She and Norbert “Wayne” Coomes were married on September 25, 1954 at St. Francis Catholic Church. Following their marriage, they lived in Pittsburg, Kansas City, Florissant, Missouri, before returning to St. Paul. He preceded her in death on July 5, 2000.
In earlier years, Betty worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons. After raising her family, she worked in the school cafeteria at St. Paul and was also the manager of the Osage Hills Country Club swimming pool. Betty was a faithful member of St. Francis Catholic Church.
She enjoyed farming and was active in politics. She enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren and spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed music and dancing and was a member of a band in her younger days.
She entered Prairie Mission Retirement Village in October of 2014, where she was currently residing. Survivors include: Two Sons – Rick Coomes and his wife, Terry, of St. Paul, Kansas Bill Coomes and his wife,Charlene, of St. Paul, Kansas Two Daughters – Carol Diskin of rural St. Paul, Kansas Cathy Woods and her husband, Phil, of Lawrence, Kansas Ten Grandchildren – Aaron Coomes, Adam Coomes, Abby Born, Janel Scales, Monica Sommers, Rachel Diskin, Sarah Mattocks, Matthew Coomes, Tyler Bradshaw, and Daniel Woods Seventeen Great-Grandchildren One Brother- John Joseph “Bud” Beachner and his wife,Carolyn; and Two Sisters – Mary Rose Coombs and Ruth Christina Hoy, all of the Kansas City area. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Verl Diskin.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 23, 2019 at St. Francis Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Francis Cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Friday at St. Francis Church.
The family will receive friends following the rosary. Due to the season of Lent, no flowers will be allowed in the church. The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to either St. Francis Catholic Church or to Prairie Mission Retirement Village.
