Obituary for Ellen Ann Smith Ellen Ann Smith, a resident of Winthrop Harbor, IL, since 1990, passed away suddenly on Sunday, April 15, 2018. Ellen was born February 15, 1951 to William H. and Luella M. Smith, at Victory Memorial Hospital in Waukegan, IL. She was a 1965 graduate of St. Anastasia Elementary School in Waukegan; graduated from Waukegan Township High School in 1969; and attended Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL.

In her youth, Ellen was an excellent swimmer in the years before organized girls sports. Her swimming skills were so good that during her high school days she was used as a “ringer” on a girls country club swim team in Lake Forest, IL. Ellen was the great great granddaughter of Samuel Pillifant, an initial settler of Waukegan.

Almost her entire work career was spent in the outboard marine engine industry. She was employed by Outboard Marine Corporation in Waukegan from 1973 until 2000, when it declared bankruptcy. Ellen then worked for Bombardier, Inc., and it’s successor corporation, BRP, Inc., Sturtevant, WI, as a Senior Buyer in the Parts and Accessories Group, from 2001 until she retired in 2015.

Long before her retirement, Ellen enjoyed gardening and working in her yard, and always had a list of projects. She loved cats, and enjoyed the company of her many feline friends over the years. Ellen rarely forgot birthdays of family and loved ones.

She is survived by her parents, William & Luella Smith; brothers Ronald (Loretta) Smith of San Diego, CA, Fredrick Smith of Waukegan, and Philip Smith of Gurnee; a nephew, Jason (Bridget) Smith; and a niece, Megan (Jeremiah) Reiser. Memorial service will be 6:30 PM on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at PETERSON & PATCH FUNERAL HOME 408 N. Sheridan Rd. Waukegan.

Visitation will be from 4:30 PM to time of service. A burial is planned for North Shore Garden of Memories in North Chicago, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ellen’s name can be made to Save-A-Pet, a no-kill pet rescue organization, located at 31664 N Fairfield Rd, Grayslake, IL 60030 (www.
