Ernest D. Scagni 1942-2018 HOLYOKE Ernest “Ernie” David Scagni, a long- time resident of Holyoke, Ma. died peacefully at his home on June 22, 2018 at the age of 75. Ernie is survived by his lovely wife of 51 years, Mary “Pat” Scagni (Kane); his children, Ernest J. Scagni and his wife Nicole (D’Addario) of Indio, CA.
, Mary Sanborn and her husband Robert of Yarmouthport, MA. and Maureen Dickinson and her husband Robert of Blandford, MA. ; his brother Robert R. Scagni and his wife Linda of East Longmeadow, MA.
; his grandchildren, Robert, Michael and Katie Sanborn; his brother-in-law John Kane and his wife Janice of South Hadley, MA. and his niece Lauren Banas, her husband Joslyn and family of Charlotte, NC. He is predeceased by his parents Ernest and Mildred Scagni (Ridstrom) and his aunts Virginia Scagni and Eleanor Scagni.
Ernie was born in Springfield, MA. on July 31, 1942 and grew up in East Longmeadow, MA. He attended Springfield Technical High School, Springfield College and achieved honorary member status in the Holyoke High School class of 1960.
He served his country in the Army National Guard. He was an accomplished registered land surveyor, guided the western chapter of the Massachusetts Association of Land Surveyors and Civil Engineers (MALSCE) as treasurer and worked for United Technologies in the Air and Space laboratory division. Ernie was a devoted father and grandfather.
He was passionate about hockey, coaching his son and son-in-law in Holyoke Youth Hockey, joining the membership of the Springfield Hockey Heritage Society and supporting his beloved Boston Bruins. While working at United Technologies and into retirement, he volunteered for twenty-three years for the FIRST Robotics program mentoring high school students aspiring to be engineers and offered expertise to the “BUZZ Team #175” in preparation for robotics competitions. He loved car racing from stock cars at Riverside Park to the Indy 500 and often reminisced about competing in the All-American Soap Box Derby with his brother Bob.
Ernie enjoyed traveling to Niantic, CT. , Indio, CA. , Harwichport, MA.
and the many ports of call from Alaska to Scandinavia while cruising the world with Pat. His children and grandchildren were the pride and joy of Ernie’s life. The legacy of Ernie’s kind spirit, passion for sports and zest for life will live on through them.
He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him. The funeral will be held Tuesday, June 26th at 9:00 a.m. from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street, followed by a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Park Cemetery, 895 Parker St. Springfield.
Calling hours will be held Monday, June 25th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a scholarship will be established in Ernie’s name. Donations can be sent to “BUZZ Robotics”, Enfield Public Schools, c/o Robert Scagni, 1010 Enfield Street, Enfield, CT. 06082.
