Evangeline Alex Pappas September 26, 1926 – December 29, 2018 Share this obituary Local Florists Sign Guestbook Evangeline Alex Pappas, 92, of Charlottesville, died peacefully at home on Saturday, December 29, 2018. She was born September 26, 1926, in Clarksburg, W.Va. , the eldest child of Charles G. and Agora Samaras Alex.
The Alex family owned the popular Manhattan restaurant in downtown Clarksburg and belonged to St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, where a young Evangeline Alex lent her beautiful voice and leadership skills by starting a choir. She graduated from Washington Irving High School in Clarksburg and then attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton. She married Gus William Pappas in 1948 and moved to Charlottesville, Va.
His family owned The Brass Rail on what is now the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville. Evangeline loved Greek dancing, singing and playing piano, and she brought her musicianship to the small start-up parish which is now The Greek Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration in Charlottesville. She organized and directed the senior choir for 30 years and started a junior choir.
She also taught Sunday school, served on the Church Board, and was president of both the Ladies Progressive Society and the Daughters of Penelope Harmonia Chapter #366. A devoted mother of three boys, she was president of the PTA at the former McGuffey Elementary School. She was also a caretaker for her father-in-law, and later for her husband.
Family was most important to her, and she delighted in attending special events near and far. Evangeline is survived by a son, William Gus Pappas of Richmond and his wife Lynda; two grandsons, Constantine (Gus) W. Pappas of Chattanooga, Tenn. , and Charles M. Pappas of Charlottesville; a granddaughter, Evangeline J. Pappas of Charlottesville; daughter-in-law, Amy S. Pappas, and brother-in-law, Frank S. Neofotis, both of Charlottesville; two brothers, George C. Alex of Chicago, and Alexander C. Alex and his wife Maria of Clarksburg; two step grandchildren, Tyson and Taya Baldridge, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2004, and by two sons, Charles G. Pappas in 1989, and Michael G. Pappas in 2006. Evangeline was a loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, Godmother, wife, and friend to many. May her memory be eternal.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at Hill and Wood Funeral Home on Market Street in Charlottesville, with the Trisagion service at 7 p.m. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 4, 2019 at The Greek Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration, 100 Perry Dr. in Charlottesville, with burial following in Riverview Cemetery.
