Frances M. Armstrong, a resident of Foxwood Springs in Raymore, passed from this life on Sunday, July 15th, as a result of injuries sustained in a single car accident earlier that afternoon. She was born on July 30, 1938 the second of three children of Merl M. & Nellie F. Street (nee Akers) in Chillicothe, Missouri. Her father was a farmer and as was common for that era her mother was a homemaker and farm wife.
Frances was an avid student who excelled at spelling, was a voracious reader. She graduated from Chillicothe High School in May of 1956. Frances attended the University of Missouri School of Nursing where she met her future husband John A. Armstrong of McKittrick, Missouri.
Upon graduation they were married in November of 1959. The marriage was blessed with four children; John H.; Sandra F.; Robert A.; and Douglas W. Armstrong. Over the next 16 years Frances worked as a Registered Nurse at four different hospitals including the Ellis Fischel State Cancer Hospital in Columbia.
During her tenure at Ellis Fischel she returned to the University of Missouri to earn her Master’s Degree in Education before becoming an Instructor in Medical Surgical Nursing at the University of Missouri-Columbia. While she enjoyed her work as a nurse, it was her experience as a teacher that really fulfilled her soul. She endeavored to keep in touch with her former students as they progressed in their careers and lives.
Frances loved music and was particularly fond of classical piano music. She possessed a strong alto singing voice and sang in many church choirs including the Raymore Christian Church. Her love of singing was manifested in her membership in the University of Missouri Chorale Union in Columbia and as a member of The Southland Chorale in Kansas City.
Frances is preceded in death by her parents and her older brother Howard M. Street. In addition to all four children, Frances is survived by her husband John and her younger sister Mary Loney of Pleasant Hill; along with six grown grand-children (Jasmine Armstrong of Pompano Beach, FL, Katie Hoskins (with Nathan) of Union, MO; Robbie Armstrong of Manhattan, KS; Rose Margaret Armstrong of Springfield, MO; Krissy Armstrong of Lawrence, KS; and Jesse Armstrong of Manhattan, KS) and one great grand daughter Sophia Mae Hoskins.
