OBITUARY Frances R. Paiz Frances Refugia Paiz, age 77, entered eternal life on August 28, 2018 in her home in San Antonio. She was born to Jesse Paiz and Helen Farias on November 2, 1940 in San Antonio, Texas. A graduate of Fox Tech High School, she earned the title of Major in the Red Jacket Squad.
She followed a thirty-year banking career having held various positions. Throughout her life she was involved in civic and church events that benefitted the communities in the east and westside of the city. In her early years, she was highly involved in the Cursillista movement.
Frances was happiest when she was of service to others. Aside from her own parish involvement, she served as cashier-teller in various Westside church bazaars. In her recent home parish of Santo Niño de Cebu, she served as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, a choir member, a member of Grupo de Oración Carismático, a Guadalupana, an A.C.T.S.
Board Member, and as an RCIA instructor. As an Associate Member with the Missionary Catechists of Divine Providence, she served on the Core Committee that developed and implemented the ongoing formation of the Associates. In addition, she served the congregation in its annual activities: The Benitia Humanitarian Award Galas, Posadas, Christmas Eve Mass, Turkey Bingos, and many other functions.
As a woman of faith, Frances emulated the words of St. Francis of Assisi: “Preach the Word of God, and if you must, use words”. One could see this in the ordinary things she did for others: House cleaning, carpentry, garage sales, hospital visits and homecare for the sick, meal preparations, a master at fund raising, Kickapoo trips with her comadres from Santo Niño, and the list goes on and on. Not to be forgotten was her 17 year-old poodle, Niko, a faithful companion, who friends remember with delight, was given a full-fledge funeral service a few years ago.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents,Jesse and Helen Paiz; siblings, Alicia Hernandez and Arturo de la Cerda. She is survived by her step-sister Lydia de la Zerda Turner, Connie de la Zerda-Mass and adopted brother, Fidel Paiz, nieces Pauline Aguilar, Cynthia Hubbard (Michael), Elvia Medellin (Roger), Mary Helen Lozano, Terry Gonzalez, Pamela Dalton (Scott) and Felicia Alonzo(Chris); Nephews: Johnny de la Zerda, Father Larry Hernandez, Anthony and Robert Hernandez, David and Robert Mass, Fidel Paiz, Jr., and many great nephews and nieces. Frances will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
