Obituary of Frances D’Angelo Frances Terzina D’Angelo, 87, of 610 Lakeview Ave. Jamestown, NY, passed away at 4:55 a.m. Thursday, July 18, 2018, in UPMC Chautauqua. A lifelong area resident, she was born September 23, 1930 in Jamestown, NY, the third daughter of the late John A. and Luisa D’Andrea D’Angelo, and was therefore named Terzina.
Frances was a 1948 graduate of Jamestown High School. She was a graduate of Fredonia State Teachers College in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree and a 1960 graduate of Syracuse University with a Masters Degree in education. While at Syracuse University, she served as a Graduate Assistant to visiting professor Dr. Edward Dolch, creator of the Dolch Sight Vocabulary listing.
She began her 38 year career with the Jamestown Public School System in 1952 at Rogers Elementary School, where she taught for ten years, followed by teaching reading, grades 3-12. She later became the Jamestown Reading Consultant and ended her career as Jamestown Elementary School Supervisor. Frances was co-founder of the Jamestown Reading is Fundamental Program (RIF), which provided personal free books to numerous local elementary students.
Later Frances received the Margaret McNamara award from RIF National. The summer of 1955, Frances was selected as the Jamestown Community Ambassador to Asti, Italy. Upon her return home, she shared her many slides with numerous groups to collect monies to send two other youth ambassador’s abroad the following summer.
Frances previously served as an active member of St John Catholic Church as a trustee, a member of the B.V.M. Sodality and Choir, she was a lay associate of the Buffalo Sisters of Mercy and served actively on the Jamestown High School Class of ’48 reunion committee. She also served on the board of directors of the SUNY Fredonia Alumni Association, was a member of the Dallas Beal Society at SUNY Fredonia, was vice president of the Sarita Weeks Fine Arts Travel Association, a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society of Women Educator’s, the New York State Retired Teachers Association, Southern Chautauqua Retired Teachers, Jamestown Breast Cancer Support Group, the Robert H. Jackson Center, Jamestown Audubon Society, Roger Tory Peterson Institute, the former Town Club, and the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by two sisters and their husbands, Erminia and Marion “Muddy” Rizzo and Mary and Albin Derecki and also by her beloved niece, Kathleen Rizzo McCarthy.
Surviving are a niece, Cindy and her husband Don Richetti of Ponte Verda Beach, FL, and their children; Ryan, Logan and Vanessa; a nephew, Carl and his wife Jennifer Rizzo of Huntersville, NC, and their children; Alison, Holden and Olivia; her late niece Kathleen’s children, Dr. Shannon, Dr. Matthew, Katelyn and Kelly McCarthy, and grand niece and grand nephew, Alison’s children, Cecelia and Quentin. The funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 1, 2018, in the Lind Funeral Home. Deacon Samuel Pellerito of Holy Apostles Parish will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., prior to the service in the funeral home. Burial will be in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Falconer,,NY.
France’s family would like to thank Dr. John LaMancuso for his caring professionalism and Vicky Krug for her wonderful care-giving and to her many loving friends who provided richness to her life in Jamestown.
