Frederick “Fred” Ronald Gates, 83, of Hillsboro, IL, passed away on Sunday, November 4, 2018 at 12:50 p.m. at his residence. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 8, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home, Hillsboro, IL. Funeral Service for Mr. Gates will be held at 7:00 p.m. following the visitation at the funeral home.

Rev. Randy Sands, pastor of Free Methodist Church, Hillsboro, IL will officiate. Mr. Gates was born on July 26, 1935 in Springfield, IL to the late Roy and Elma (Hart) Gates.

He attended Feitshans High School in Springfield, IL, and was the owner and operator of Gates Pizza, along with working at many other restaurants. Mr. Gates lived in Hillsboro, IL for most of his life. He married Colleen Collins on September 26, 1970 in Springfield, IL.

She survives in Hillsboro, IL. Mr. Gates was a member of the Hillsboro, IL Lions Club, where he was previously president. He loved drawing and bowling, and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

Mr. Gates is survived by six children, Frederick R. Gates Jr., New Mexico, Les Gates, Springfield, IL, Jerry Gates, Jason Gates, Michael Gates, Hillsboro, IL, and Debbie (Wife Elizabeth) Otter, Hillsboro, IL; eight grandchildren, Jessica Otter (Joe Wittenmyer), Jennifer (Husband Josh) Jeffers, Jackie Maugle (Jason Hockett), Ann (Husband Zach) Mcintyre, Lacey Ginger (Tim Cyprian), Lauren Ginger, Isaiah Gates, and Faith Bolyard; and eleven great grandchildren. Mr. Gates was also preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters, and one daughter, Cathy Otter. Memorials may be given to the family.
