Fritz’s Obituary Fritz Gaylord Nagel died February 2, 2019 in Anchorage. Born in Denver, Colorado, on February 14, 1922, he was 96 years old. He attended Denver public schools until 1937 when he won a National Merit Scholarship to Middle School in Concord, MA where he graduated with High Honors.

Fritz majored in Geological Engineering at Princeton University where he played Freshman Baseball, sang in the Glee Club and played on the champion Lightweight Football team. His college education was interrupted by World War ll when he fought in Europe as a combat engineer in the 11th Armored Division. He emerged unscathed except for a non-disabling case of frostbite during the Battle of the Bulge.

He returned to Princeton after the war and graduated summa cum laude in 1947. Immediately thereafter he joined Marathon Oil Company for a 38 year career in petroleum exploration. He began as a field geologist and party chief working out of Durango, Colorado.

Concurrently, he received a direct commission in the Corps of Engineers and served six years in the Army Reserve. Following a leave of absence to obtain a MS in Geology at Northwestern University, he was promoted to District Geologist in Salt Lake City, then Sidney, Nebraska, next Lafayette, Louisiana. He was named Gulf Coast District Exploration Manager in Houston, Texas and in 1975 moved to Anchorage as Division Exploration Manager.

He retired there in 1985. Fritz met Barbara Barnett on the Hopi Indian Reservation in northern Arizona where she was teaching school and he was mapping structural geology in the Black Mesa Basin. They were married in 1948, and to this union were born two boys and a little sister.

In 1994, Fritz and Barbara moved to Chester Park, the retirement cooperative on Muldoon Road, where he was active in its governance for many years. Fritz was predeceased by his parents, Fritz Andrew Nagel and Josephine Gaylord Nagel, by his wife, and by his brother, Jerome Kaub (“Jerry”) Nagel. He is survived by son George Gaylord Nagel, son David Barnett Nagel (Laurel), daughter Betsy Nagel West (Larry), grandson Nigel Raymond Nagel, and sister-in-law Cynthia Fels Nagel.

His ashes and Barbara’s will be interred together in Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery or scattered jointly from the rim of Oraibi Mesa on the Hopi Reservation.
