Gaetano “Don” A. Proto, 88, of North Providence, passed away Thursday, July 19, 2018 at Roger Williams Medical Center. He was the beloved husband of Viola (Luisi) Proto. Born in Bristol, he was the son of the late Ferdinand and Carmela (Fiore) Proto.

Gaetano was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He worked as a chemical operator for Ciba-Geigy and as a professional furniture refinisher for many years. Upon retiring, he was a custodian for the North Providence Police Department.

He was an excellent story teller who could light up a room with his smile and laughter. He was a loving, giving, compassionate and selfless gentleman who had a big heart. Besides his wife of 63 years, he is survived by his son, Donald A. Proto, and his wife Camille Pezzi; two daughters, Cynthia Sweet, and her husband Donald, and Michelle Proto Linarello, and her husband Salvatore; two sisters, Sue Souza and Carmela “Millie” Lima, and six grandchildren, Donald, Derek and Vanessa Proto, Donald and Brianna Sweet, and Samantha Nolte.

He was the bother of the late Frank, Joseph and Tony Proto, Catherine Dias and Mary Hamel. His funeral will be held Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at 9 a.m. from the Maceroni Funeral Home, 1381 Smith St., North Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Augustine Church, 639 Mt. Pleasant Ave, Providence.

Burial with military honors will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
