Gary’s Obituary Gary Douglas Smith, age 74 of New Ulm, TX, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2018 in Katy, TX. Gary was born in Alief, TX to Douglas “Bunk” and Ruby Lee Smith on December 23, 1944. He attended school in Sugar Land, TX graduating from Dulles High School in 1963.

Gary married Mary Ann Smith on October 8, 1965 in Houston, TX. After high school, he worked farming cotton and eventually went on to own Smith Farmer’s Gin in Needville and Tavener. Gary had a passion for ginning cotton and his passion showed in his work.

He loved watching sports, especially football and Astros baseball, as well as old movies. Gary enjoyed spending his time at work, visiting with his many friends there, even after retiring. Gary, or “Pa” as he was referred to, loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

They all held a very special place in his heart. Gary had recently built his “dream home “on his farm in New Ulm. He loved his new house and hosted many large family events there.

It brought him much joy to see family and friends fishing in his ponds and spending time at the creek. Gary loved sitting on his back patio enjoying the beautiful view and watching the deer feed on his property. Gary is preceded in death by the love of his life, Mary Ann Smith, his parents Ruby Lee and Douglas Smith and son-in-law, Wally Statema.

Gary is survived by his children Joan Ann Statema and Andy Smith; his daughter-in-law Kim Smith; grandchildren Marylee and Roxanne Barcley and Noah and Elle Smith; great-grandchildren Scott, Maggie, and Jaxton; his brother Gene Smith and sister Mary Ann Sanguinetti, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family of Gary Smith wishes to extend a sincere thanks to all of their family and friends for their love and support.
