Gary Mays Thompson, 71, of Sandusky, passed away on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 in Stein Hospice Care Center. He was born on June 7, 1947 in Sandusky to the late Robert Eugene Thompson and the late Margaret Emma (Mays) Thompson. A 1965 graduate of Sandusky High School, Gary went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University, majoring in retailing.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and worked for Clemons Boats for many years. Gary loved woodworking, genealogy, hunting, and spending time with his family and friends. Gary is survived by his wife, Jane A. (French) Thompson; sisters, Helen Barbara Thompson and Diane Lee (Gary) Leimbach; brother, Mark Robert (Beth Ann [Gaugler]) Thompson; step-sons, Jerry R. (Holly) Johnson and Eric V. (Rhonda) Johnson; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Sharon (French) Frost and Roseanna Pryor; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Clayton and Barbara (Metzger) Thompson; maternal grandparents, Roy Herman and Helen Edith (Schaefer) Mays; brother, David Ronald Thompson; brother-in-law, Bradley Louis Wisler; and sisters-in-law, Jean (French) Grindstaff and Shirley (French) Dress. Friends may call on Friday, December 21 from 12 p.m. until funeral services begin at 1:30 p.m. in Toft Funeral Home & Crematory, 2001 Columbus Ave. , Sandusky.

Rev. Dr. Eric L. Bodenstab will officiate. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Gary’s name to Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870. Condolences may be shared with the family by visiting toftfuneralhome.com.
