George’s Obituary “…Our family has been through a lot. Ups and downs…remember some of our struggles, some of our fights, some of our victories…keep the faith, work for the good, aim for the high…” (from George’s StoryCorps interview recorded at the San Francisco Public Library on August 27, 2015) George Ang Guy (Gue Se Chuan), age 85 of Fremont, passed away on March 15, 2019 at the Spectrum Health Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids. George was born in the City of Sichuan, in the province of Fukien, China in 1933, immigrated to the Philippines in 1936, then again to the United States with his young family in 1975, where they settled in Fremont.

He received an accounting degree and a Master’s Degree in Business from the University of San Carlos in Cebu City, Philippines and a Master’s Degree in Economics from Stanford University. He taught Business at the University of San Carlos and at Grand Valley State College. He also worked at the Gerber Baby Food Products Company as an assistant to the Vice President of Finance from 1976 – 1989 and at Fremont Mutual Insurance Company as an actuary from 1990 until his retirement in 1997.

George was a man of books, maps, and road trips. He enjoyed reading about Chinese, world, and military history, and he had an encyclopedic knowledge about these topics. He taught his children to navigate using paper maps as soon as they could read, and he was an avid collector of maps from around the world.

Maps that no one else was allowed to touch. He cultivated a love of the outdoors during his years at Stanford and loved to take his family on camping trips and long road trips with stops at every educational site along the way. He instilled a true and enduring love of learning in his three children.

His best joys in life in his final years were his wife’s excellent home cooked Chinese meals and his four grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Decing C. Guy, brother Dr. Charles (Dorothy) Guy, daughter Athena Guy Malloy (Chris Malloy), son Karl Guy, daughter Ann Guy (Alex Chase), and grandchildren Quinn and Darcy Malloy and Mia and Lincoln Chase. The family is planning a private ceremony.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations in his memory to the Fremont Area District Library (www. fremontlibrary.net/about-us/donating-to-the-library), where George spent many happy hours ordering books from the Reference Librarian. Donations may also be made in his memory to the United States National Parks, where George loved climbing mountains and walking among the trees, at www.
