Obituary for George “Bill” Lauderdale George (Bill) William Lauderdale was born on April 20, 1957 and died unexpectedly on May 3, 2018. He is survived by his beloved wife of 18 years, Janet Lauderdale, his daughter Megan Kemp, his son Alex Lauderdale, many close friends and family members—and three Golden Retrievers, Lola, Bink, and “Z”. Bill graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a degree in Biochemistry.
He holds the United States Patent as co-inventor of a method for recovery of riboflavin, granted on April 7, 1992. Bill was a true Renaissance man of the 21st century. As a scientist, he was a gifted thinker, researcher, innovator, and mentor to young researchers.
He was also a lover of dogs and had been recognized with top national awards in both obedience and conformation competitions. He was an American Kennel Club (AKC) judge. Bill was well-known for his passion for the sport of purebred dogs, and he studied and competed to improve breeds.
He had a particular love for Golden Retrievers, and he was devoted to preserving the best of the breed. His many friends would say that Bill was, in fact, “Best of Breed”. Bill was an entrepreneur and had developed several businesses to improve the lives of dogs, including a specialty line of healthful dog food.
He was an artist and a connoisseur of wine (fine reds in particular). He loved to bike, run, and fish, particularly in his native state of Colorado. His taste in music was wide-ranging and eclectic.
He always had a home improvement project (or two or three) in progress. He loved to travel and had a special fondness for the trips he made to Ireland and Italy. And he was always up for hitting the road in the van, loaded with Golden Retrievers and with Janet riding shotgun, to head out to another dog show.
As a young man, Bill served in the Navy. He was a great patriot who loved God and his country. Above all else, Bill lived life to the fullest and had been known to say, “If I died tomorrow, I’m okay with it, because I lived a great life.
I feel like the life I am living is heaven on earth”. Among Bill’s many passions, Janet (his “Mar”) came first. She was his true soulmate and the love of his life, and he was the love of hers.
He cherished and loved his daughter Meg and his son Alex and was proud of the adults they have become. Bill was much loved, and all who knew him will always remember his kind heart and gentle soul. Bill’s professional career included time at Coors Biotech/Zeagen Inc., Colorado State University, Martek Bioscience, Phycal Hawaii R&D, Allylix Inc., Joule Unlimited Technologies Inc., TerraVia Holdings Inc., and Cargill.
He had more than 20 years of experience managing large industrial fermentation projects encompassing technology transfers, maintaining stable plant operations, and direct hands-on supervision of engineering, technical, and operation teams.
