Obituary for Mary Helen Jordan Hart Helen was born in Lenoir City, Tennessee, in December of 1919 to Mary Ella Tallent and James Holt Jordan. Her father was an electrician with Tennessee Power and Electric. MaeBelle was Helen’s older sister and J.B. her younger brother.
Her parents were divorced in the late 1920s. Ella and her children moved to Etowah, TN, where her parents lived. Ella went to work for Southern Bell as a telephone operator.
Not long after Helen’s brother was struck by spinal meningitis and lost his sight. In 1934 Ella married Mr. A.C. Shearer, a wholesale grocer. Helen was active in high school thespians, performing in several school plays.
She was the local school carnival queen in junior high, and Etowah High School’s first football/homecoming queen. Helen graduated from Etowah High and then took a year’s course in a secretarial and business school in Chattanooga. Helen met Fred Hart in 1939 while they both worked for J.C. Penny’s in Cleveland, TN.
They married in January of 1940 and moved to Johnson City, TN, Fred’s hometown. Fred went to work for General Mills until he joined the Army Air Force during WWII. Helen’s first child, Robert aka Bob or Buzz, was born in 1944 while Fred was oversees.
After the war Fred went back to work for General Mills. Helen’s second son, William/Bill was born in Hopkinsville, KY, in 1950. Not long after Fred was transferred to Enid, Oklahoma, where they lived for the next 18 years.
In 1968 Fred was transferred to Kansas City. Helen and Fred found the house of their dreams with a white picket fence. Helen loved the Kansas City area.
She remained there until the death of Fred in 2003. During that time she learned to ice skate, become a regular at an aerobics class, work in a clothing store, and make dozens of good friends. She saw the birth of her grandchildren, Sarah, Aaron, Bess, and Martha.
Helen loved to travel. She and Fred made 15 trips to Switzerland as well as several other European countries. They traveled extensively in the United States.
Helen was raised Southern Baptist and became a Presbyterian when she married Fred. Over the decades she taught Sunday School and was always in church on Sunday. Her Christian faith was a central mainstay of her life.
It informed her loving acceptance and inclusion of everyone she met. When Fred died in 2003 Helen moved to Fort Collins, CO, to be near her son Bill. By this time her eyesight was failing as well as her hearing.
Otherwise Helen remained in remarkably good health. Always a person who made friends and kept them, she made dozens of new friends in Fort Collins. She even managed to travel some.
Helen lived to welcome seven great children, the last, Annie, being born just a week before Helen died. Helen is survived by her sons Bob (Becky) and Bill (Karen), her grandchildren, Sarah (Eric), Aaron, Bess (Seth), and Martha (Jason), and seven great grandchildren, Oliver, Elliot, Macy, Tallie, Arden, Fred, and Annie, as well as nieces and nephews.
